Happy New Years from Intel to all consumers: https://www.theregister.c ... tel_cpu_design_flaw/

As quoted:

"A fundamental design flaw in Intel's processor chips has forced a significant redesign of the Linux and Windows kernels to defang the chip-level security bug.

Programmers are scrambling to overhaul the open-source Linux kernel's virtual memory system. Meanwhile, Microsoft is expected to publicly introduce the necessary changes to its Windows operating system in an upcoming Patch Tuesday: these changes were seeded to beta testers running fast-ring Windows Insider builds in November and December.

Crucially, these updates to both Linux and Windows will incur a performance hit on Intel products. The effects are still being benchmarked, however we're looking at a ballpark figure of five to 30 per cent slow down, depending on the task and the processor model. More recent Intel chips have features – specifically, PCID – to reduce the performance hit.

So, for those who enjoyed playing video games on PCs with Intel-based CPUs, be sure to note that some of you may be one of those users who will expect to experience performance drops. Of to what extent, I don't know, your mileage may vary vastly."

Hah, read about that, what a riot.

This is the first time I've had a computer now for nearly two years (built latest one in March 2016) and not had the itch to build another. It still smokes everything I play, and since all games seemingly need these days is a good GPU what's the point really?

Any reason to build anything new with what's coming down the line?

I don't see the need to constantly add the shiniest and newest CPU or GPU to my rig. It does what I need it to do.

Looks like it exists in some AMD chips as well now. Ther are already patches coming for Intel from MS and Linux.

Yeah, but they are software patches which is why the performance will take a hit.

Yeah I didn't realize that til after the fact. From what I've read since though it seems like the likelihood of it effecting most people is pretty small.

I believe the biggest performance will be felt on the server side of the house, especially with VMs.

Meltdown is limited to Intel chips, Spectre attacks Intel, AMD and ARM processors.

The more I read about this, along with becoming more cynical as I get older, is that this probably isn't a "bug" at all. I would bet at good odds that this "bug" is actually an NSA/CIA/whatever backdoor that existed for many years until somebody not in the know actually figured it out.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I highly doubt any of this was unintentional.

I mean Twin isn't wrong. Intel is known to let vulnerabilities in place in order to play ball with the NSA.

The last tech company to not play ball, the CEO got charged with insider trading.

It's pretty likely. When the Snowden leak happened it revealed a boatload of backdoors for the NSA hidden in all kinds of tech, but I doubt that was everything. Hell, they were physically taking people's laptop orders and loading their own spyware on them and then redirecting them to the people who ordered them.

I mean I don't see how we could, what with the inescapable gravitational pull from your moms ass and all.

quite possible but after reading https://danluu.com/cpu-bu ... gs/ -
it looks like a management problem. it's hardly ever the engineers.
complex architecture (like pre-fetching and executing instructions w/o any security checks in order to go faster) needs proper testing, not management buzz words.
it's a mishmash of things imo, from ever growing complexity of everything, to alphabet soup agencies.
also as people get smarter and get better tools, nothing designed in the past is ever going to be safe, regardless of the work practices (good and or bad).

What you mean, is NSA is masturbating along with millions of Americans as they masturbate. Or is it just NTAK?

Yep, and still no word on RSP etc. I cannot tell you how boring the game is to me now, no hardcore and I don't know anybody I'm playing with so it might as well be bots. DEAD to me right now.
Angry_Cuban13 14th Nov
This is how EA sees its customers noobs = $$$ hackers = $$$
Angry_Cuban13 14th Nov
Yeah prettty pathetic they have that "option" but they need to make the noobs want the game
webdvlop 14th Nov
hey
TwinGunsLLP 13th Nov
Yep, sucks! Hope they fix it!
JL 13th Nov
Conquest Catch-Up... wow!
Angry_Cuban13 13th Nov
Wow that's sad, they just don't want to make people try
TwinGunsLLP 13th Nov
They're now "tweaking it", but it will always be there in order to make matches closer. I sincerely mean this when I say "F them".
TwinGunsLLP 13th Nov
Wow yep they confirmed it, our hunches were correct. Unbelievable, I am SOOOO sick of this newbie crutch shit I cannot stand it. https://forums.battlefiel ... -up-mechanics#latest
TwinGunsLLP 12th Nov
For sure! There doesn't seem to be any concrete proof yet, so fingers crossed it's just nonsense!
Texas_Flexas 12th Nov
Oh come on... The biggest thrill of conquest is the fact that very close matches are RARE. To i understand why/if they have a feature like this, but imo it kills the magic. I really hope this is not true.
TwinGunsLLP 12th Nov
Hmm, interesting discussion about what I've noticed in BFV conquest, A LOT of very close matches. No way they could have implemented this right? https://forums.battlefiel ... from-the-game#latest
TwinGunsLLP 12th Nov
To me, the game just needs a ton more content. I don't get anything like the sandbox feeling of BF4 where there's just a ton of things to do.
TwinGunsLLP 12th Nov
Oh nice!
Angry_Cuban13 12th Nov
They need to Nerf LMGs, they are stupid OP
Angry_Cuban13 12th Nov
Glad I only did the $15/mo thing and if I get bored I only lost $15
Angry_Cuban13 12th Nov
I enjoyed the Cathedral one and the Aerodrome as well.
TwinGunsLLP 11th Nov
The map with the burning cathedral/library is pretty cool, but the rest are a big fat meh.
TwinGunsLLP 11th Nov
Meh, think I'll come back to BF4 tomorrow. BFV is getting pretty boring really fast for me at least. I can't think of a single map I like lol. I'll try again once hardcore and maybe some more content shows up.
