1. Avenger Stalker - $60 standalone or $75 for the game package for new players

The Avenger is going to be one of the cheapest good all around ships. It is meant to be a bounty hunter so right now it comes with cells for prisoners in the back but it will be possible to remove those cells in favor of better suited load outs. Right know they have 2 other variants with different modules installed The Warlock and the Titan. The Titan has no cells equipped in back making room for larger cargo space, so as a pirate you can carry more loot it. The warlock however has a EMP module equipped making it far more valuable when traveling with a fleet. Warlock flies up detonates the EMP next to the ship the other ship then closes and proceeds to take the cargo while the ship is disabled. The EMP is functional I'm not sure on how effective it will be, also when using the EMP it also disables the warlock as well. Another feature that makes this as an attractive ship for both bounty hunters and pirates is the 2 sucker punch distortion cannons that the ship comes stock with, these can disable the enemy ships systems making them easy pickings. The shield and power plants are good for the price. The ship also comes with a S3 gimbal mounted Tigerstreik giving it a good amount of firepower for the price. For costing only  $60 this ship is a great all around ship. The only downside is that it is so small it cannot carry much more than just the pilot. So you will have no one to pilot the ship while retrieving cargo from the other ship. Other than that it is a good starter.

2. Cutlass Black - $100 for standalone and $115 for starter pack

The Cutlass is the next in the next price range right now there are three variants but only 2 of them will be decent pirate ships the Blue and the Black. . So far the only difference is the Blue can equip a S5 shield while the Black only has a S4, but other than they are the same for now. This ship is known to be a infamous pirate ship and for a reason. Like the Avenger it comes with Suckerpunch but the Cutlass has a S3 where as the Avenger has only a S2. But the Avenger right now has S3 missiles while the Cutlass has only S2. However unlike the Avenger the Cutlass is a multi-crew ship, having a crew of at least 3, so the Cutlass can disable the ship and will have the ability to cut a hole in the enemy ship through a porthole in the bottom of it and drop crew down in to take the ship. The cargo space is at 33 much more than the Avengers current max of 4 It also has a manned turret for added fire power. Also it has a tractor beam that can pull cargo or salvage into the ship when the ramp is lowered. Currently the cutlass is kinda slow for what it is meant for but it will be getting a rework soon to fix some of the issues, but also the way the engines are configured gives it nice maneuverability. Right now this is the cheapest multi crew flight ready ship and should be good working a group or working solo.

3. Constellation Andromeda $225 or $275 for package

The Andromeda is currently the largest ship that is flyable. Right now it is considered one of the best pirate ships due to the speed for its size and decent cargo capacity of 134. Another feature is the ships number of missiles it can carry 48 missiles at a time with 4x S1 mounts and 2x S2 mounts, the number of missiles dwarfs anything currently in its price range. Also it carries 4x S4 gimbal mounts giving it substantial fire power. It has 2 manned S4 turrets, and as a bonus carries a Merlin docked on the rear of the ship adding an extra fighter to annoy the enemy ship in a fight. It can carry a S6 power plant and a S6 shield, both are respectable on a ship of this size. Also it can use a crew of 5 but the size of the ship would allow you to carry another 4 or more crew men to serve as marines in taking another ship. making this ship great for solo attacking another ship. And if pirating is not to your taste the armaments and cargo capacity make it a good trade ship in dangerous space.

4. Caterpillar- limited purchase $245

This ship is still in concept so there is hardly any facts to go on when talking about it, but its been said that the ship will be highly customize-able being allowed to equip plenty of modules.  It will have 4x S4 gimbal mounts like the Andromeda but has S5 shield and power plant. However the  turrets and missile mounts haven't been released yet  so it could hit almost as hard as the Andromeda. But I see this being more of a pirate base/command ship escorted by smaller ships, the engines are much less powerful than the Andromeda's. I envision it being used to collect cargo that smaller ships like the Cutlass take from their targets and have a limited combat role. Its cargo capacity is listed as 512 so it is much larger cargo capacity than the Andromeda. Still much of this ship depends on the modules you can equip.

5. Starfarer Gemini- limited purchase $240

This ship is still being built, the Starfarer ships are meant for fueling platforms but you can remove the fuel storage and make room for more cargo. The Gemini right now is supposed to be able to haul 2488 units of cargo about 1000 less than the Starfarer base model. The difference is that the Gemini is meant for a military transport and the power supply has been upgraded to a S7 and the shields to 2xS4. and I believe that the Gemini model will be more useful to pirates than the base model due to its increased defenses. So this ship and the catepillar will fill the same role as the base/command ship for a fleet. However The Gemini will have a far greater cargo capacity and better defenses. The difference in fire power  is hard to tell until the caterpillar's stats have been posted, but the Gemini has no gimbal or fixed mounted weapons but instead has 2x S5 unmanned turrets, 1x S5 manned turret, and 2x S4 manned turrets. So unless the Caterpillar gets a crazy huge turret upgrade the fire power will be similar with the Gemini being the better defensive ship with presumably more turrets all over it to provide a greater chance of a turret being able to attack a target.

6. The Crucible- limited sales $350

This ship will be invaluable to a pirate organization, this ships primary function is to repair ships. Doesn't sound super great for pirating does it? Well it is. Take into account that in Star Citizen you will be able to board ships and capture them for yourself. Now if that ships engines and thrusters were destroyed no way would you be able to take it anywhere. Now if the organization had a Crucible they could call on it to repair the damaged ship increasing your potential profit due to the ability to fly it back to your hangar or to a merchant to sell. So far there is little released about the Crucible but it will have a S7 and S6 unmanned turret, 300 cargo capacity, and a crew size of 4. Crew can remote control the repair arms on the ship to conduct repairs and there have been rumors that there will be drones to help with repairs. So however you look at it this ship will be a valuable addition to any fleet.
store page- https://robertsspaceindus ... il-Crucible#features

These aren't the only ones you can use but i feel these will be the most useful I would like to mention the following:

Freelancer MISC- $165, It is a decent choice for a pirate ship with decent firepower and cargo hold but personally the viewpoints for the pilot of a Free lancer is terrible and I really don't like them for that fact.

The Mustang Beta- $40 It has a small amount of cargo space in it but weapons are pretty uninspiring and I would recommend just spending the extra $20 and getting the Avenger.

The Reliant Kore- limited sale $50- still under production, it contains an impressive amount of cargo space for the price and has a tractor beam but as far as armament goes it is pretty light and I recommend spending the extra $10 and getting the Avenger.

The Banu Merchantman- limited sale $250- still under production, might fit in with the Caterpillar and the Gemini, especially with the over 5000 unit cargo hold and its supposed to be fast in order to run blockades. Also it carries a conference room for dealings with other groups (example: other pirates, organizations wanting to hire us as mercs, etc.. but there is no information on armament so until its released there is no telling how apt it would be in a pirate base role.

Lastly the Vanguard Sentinel- limited sale $265, it is an E-warfare ship meant to jam coms and EMP enemy ships, it has no cargo capacity so as a solo ship it would be nearly worthless but as part of a fleet I could see it display plenty of potential.

Not to mention the Capitol ships would be terrific command/base ship but as they are over $1000 and would need a big pirate fleet to justify operations cost, so I excluded them from the list.

Thanks for breaking it down Barney Style. That seems super fun to play!

Do you have to pay to download the game on top of using real life $$ to purchase ships?

Right now it is in alpha only parts of the game are playable. They have a port and system to play in and have setup a pvp and pve dogfight module, with a PVP FPS module on the way. You do have to spend $ right now to get in but if you do buy a packaged ship it comes with the game when it is released and alpha access, also some packages are a +SQ42 package. Those come with star citizen and squadron 42. Squadron 42 is a single player game set in the universe  and will provide a backstory to the setting for star citizen and should be released before star citizen as all the devs have SQ42 work prioritized over star citizen. Not to say that they arent focused on SC because they are, and everything they do in SQ42 will be used in SC.

SQ42 Trailer

Since SC is crowd source its funded by you buying a ships, and right now they have almost $110 million in funding just from crowd sourcing, but when the game is released every ship will be available to purchase with ingame currency. So to get started the cheapest game packs are $45 and that's  either to get an aurora or the mustang and that includes the ship SC alpha access and game when released plus a few goodies. For $60 those are the $45 package + SQ42 preorder, and those also come with a mustang or aurora. the SQ42 preorder by itself is $45. But once you have the access you can purchase stand alone ships and not pay the package price. Also right now the game allows you to upgrade ships by trading yours in to get another one. So the aurora that comes with the packages standalone price is $25 and you want to upgrade to an avenger which is $60 standalone, you will only pay the difference so it will be $35. But you also keep all the package items that came with, so you will still have the SC download, the SQ42 download, and whatever the original insurance was on the original ship.

yes and no, from what i understand you can pledge money for base game (?) and then buy stuff if you want, or you can get a game package such as Constellation Andromeda for $275. Andromeda standalone will set you back $225.
but then again, according to the above, Avenger Stalker is $60 standalone or $75 for the game package for new players. so with this package it's only $15 extra for the base game and $50 extra if one chooses the andromeda option???
and what happens when your ship gets "stoled" or destroyed, $100-300 wasted? i guess that's what the 6 months insurance is for?
anyway, that's the risk i'm willing to take. one way to do this would be to get a crew together and buy whatever space ship we need on a separate account and make it available to commander/captain/head honcho. it isn't really a game that i want to get into by my self.

Star Wars version that my wife made up (Fair Warning! - spoiler included at the end.)

Luke got an invitation
Didn’t go to the Tosche Station
With a puppet on his shoulders
He levitated boulders
He was dancing with himself

Han Solo was a playa
Got it on with Princess Leia
She made a dirty martini
In her golden bikini
She was dancing with herself

Anakin went to the dark side
But he was still good on the inside
But he showed no remorse
When he was using the force
He was dancing with himself

Luke went to Machu Picchu
No one knew but R2D2
But little BB8 came and showed ‘em the way
They were dancing with themselves ah ah oh ooooh

1. First off the Andromeda package doesn't come with SQ42, but it does come with SC and way more extras than the cheaper starter packages like fish and fish tank for your hangar and also an atv to drive around in the hangar. And all the 1st purchase you will need is a package with SC included for alpha access and game preorder, and from there you can start buying standalones or upgrade the package ship.

2. Insurance should cover the loss or theft of your ship, and the amount of time the ship comes with is how long you have free insurance, after that you have to use in game currency to buy more, some ships are LTI, ships only come with this on special sales events, it is lifetime insurance so the player with an LTI ship will never have to pay insurance. I you don't want to wait for the sale there are 3rd party vendors with them, I recommend r/Starcitizen_trades on reddit.
link- https://www.reddit.com/r/ ... Starcitizen_trades/

3. We could make a group account for admins and right now you have the ability to gift ships and if it is carried over into the full game we can transfer our ships to the admin account if we were unable to get on for an event or if it is a great group asset like the Crucible. But i don't know how gifting will carry over so this is just speculation. But probably the most certain way to do it is give someone you trust your account login, my brother will be playing so i can give him my account login and if I have a ship that is a necessity for the operation he can login to my account and play it.

r/Starcitizen_trades is like future star citizens craigslist lol
thanks for explaining it all, it's such a complex game and the main reason i'm interested in ship "co-investment" is the fact it sort of guaranties i start playing with a MIg infused crew.

edit: i am not interested in the single player game at all, just the mp.

I have a 325a and it works OK. It's not built for pirating, but at least it can dogfight OK. The UI on it is broken in 2.2, so I can't do much. They added a bunch of new shit in 2.2 including the bounty system and rep system.

Last night they pushed 2.2.1 to help fix some bugs the caused in 2.2

The 325 are decent ships they pack a decent punch for there price range but with the tiny amount of cargo hold they don't make good pirate ships.
