!P or !F - Punish or Forgive?

Hey, we've all done it.

  • Threw that frag
  • Mortared the objective
  • Someone walked into your line-of-fire
  • Blew the C4 when the enemy grabbed the flag
  • Heaven forbid you laid-down a claymore on hardcore

...Oops,  you team killed.

Then, you get punished - right when you were about to defuse the MCOM.   It's "Aww, dude!  Really?"

What about when it's the other way around.  A noob RPGs you or shoots you when you're trying to drop a medkit.  It's like "WTF?!"  And you hit the !P without a millisecond of hesitation.

What's the saying about forgiveness and turning the other cheek?

Hey, I punish sometimes - but I normally Forgive.  (I do have a battle with one player specifically, if I TK him, he always punishes.  And when it's the other way around, I do the same.)  But, when you punish, it's not helping your team.  Is it?

So, what's the philosophy here at MIg?  Do you punish - with extreme prejudice?  Or do  you let it slide?  Or does it depend?

I am just wondering if there was a general consensus here.   What do you think?

I can't speak for all of MIg, but for myself, 99% of the time I forgive. I know accidents happen, and like you said it hurts the team. The only time I ever punish if it's a good friend I'm on skype with kills me, joking with him, or if the player is a continuous offender in the same round. A couple tks from the same guy, yeah, it's possible and that's fine...

It also depends on the game mode as well. I play on Server 10 mix mode, so if it's Rush, Oblit, or GM, I pretty much never punish. Usually I tell the team to nuke the location while I'm dancing around the mcomm making sure no ninjas are coming up. I do know of some that are punish happy, but I don't see a point in it.

Anyone on the 10 server knows I do tk from time to time, not too often, but I rarely ever get punished. I'm happy people are that way, but usually when I am punished, it's by a certain platoon or by a new person joining the server.

Great write up. Thanks for going over how it hurts our team.

I agree that you should not use the punish system, if the TK was obviously an accident - only if someone is actually TKing intentionally.

With that being said, I have punished players before, not knowing if it was an accident, or if it was intentional. Only because they fail to acknowledge that they TKed a teammate --> "If you don't say sorry I will punish you."

Thanks!

Yeah.. I almost always immediately say sorry. But there's that time when it's hectic, you were rushing to defuse the MCOM, you TK-ed someone who was there in the smoke - and while you're defusing - BAM! you get punished and the MCOM blows up.

That's the worst. And you know that's when they are the most likely to Punish - because they are PISSED OFF!

I just assigned a macro to my keyboard to say "Shit! Sorry!" We shall see if that works out.

Also, I just donated to the website and it says I get "Punish Protection" at the level I contributed. What exactly does that do?

I can't answer for everyone, but the punish system is meant for INTENTIONAL TKs. So, I rarely punish unless it was so terrible it might as well have been on purpose, or it's someone who has gotten me a few times and is just trouncing around not caring what they kill.

It just means if you TK someone and they tyle "!p" you won't die but after so many TKs the server will kick you automatically. Happens to me in Metro or Operation Locker all the time. If people wouldn't run in front of an LMG or 320s...

Knowing the consequences should deviate your thoughts. An when I say your thoughts if you don't understand then accept the consequences. Simple as pie [3.142] don't shoot into a friendly territory, what is so hard to understand. So why shoot in a area with friendlies?, ....because you want the kill but don't want the justification of your TK?

[EXAMPLE!!!] You take a mortar..I see a enemy shooting at my team on dat 3x2 tft screen (mortar screen)....I want that sucker killed so I launch....damn I killed my teammate.....you saw a team mate but still fired the mortar...what next....!p

It is understandable no one is perfect and yea accidents do happen running infront of teammates are frequent, but think like this...do I really want to continuously aim at friendlies in combat? Do I really want that risk of !f or !p? You judge from your actions.

I prefer to lead by example and rarely punish. It has to be egregious and or utterly ignorant for me to do it.

I have to admit that it takes a bit of restraint to not punish.

Getting TKed at the start of the match by someone firing at everyone = !P.

The moron with the bomb running to our base (not because there's a strategy, but because they don't know they have to bomb or they don't know how to play that mode) = TK

But, sitting at the MCOM in smoke, arming, and your teammate TKs you. Man, it's frustrating. At times like that, I wish that !P meant (Punish AND Punch the Player in the Face!). But, I hold back. Hoping that he can finish the objective.

I am just saying that for sake fo the team, it's usually better not to punish. Especially, in game modes like Rush when attacking.

But, I love seeing it on the other side!

you are not strategic then. when I lead 2-0 in obliteration I love to stay in spawn so that'S a pain in the ass for the enemy to get it

If you're stupid - !P
If you don't bother to check fire - !P
If you're trying to steal my kill and kill me instead - !P
If I'm knifing your kill, you see I'm knifing your kill, and you continue to spray - !P
If you blindly launch explosives in the general direction of teammates hoping for kills before they get them - !P
If you spray blindly in the direction of the enemy even though your team is pushing forward ahead of you, because you're too chicken-shit to risk your KDR - !P
If you mortar in locations your teammates are near - !P
If you put C4 on a vehicle hoping for free kills and it gets me killed instead - !P
If you lay claymores in HC and I hit one - !P
If you're sniping and kill me as well as an enemy because you have no patience or can't clear LOS - !P
If you throw a non-lethal nade and it kills me anyways - !P
If you !P'd me earlier on a clearly accidental kill - !P
If I'm knifing someone and you "try to help me" - !P
It's Cuban, Jenkins, FratHo, or my short list of favorites - !P
It's maxipad - !P !P !P !P !P !P !P !P !P !P !P !P !P

If I run into a fucking shitstorm of bullets and explosives knowing full well I probably won't make it - !F
If I run into your line of fire, ******AS DETERMINED BY ME, NOT BY YOU!!!!!******* - !F
If the stupidass server spawns me in front of a friendly's gun in the middle of a firefight (thanks for that btw DICE) - !F
If I'm feeling generous or had a really damned good slice of chocolate cake - !F

Anything else I probably haven't listed that involves you being an asshat - !P

tl;dr: 1) You do stupid shit and I die - !P; I do stupid shit, and you should have been able to avoid killing me - !P; I do stupid shit, know full well it's stupid shit, and die in the process (unless you're a general jackass)  - !F; Server's fault - !F

Honestly, on my 1st time playing hardcore, I surprisingly didn't even nick a teammate, let alone kill them. I got tkilled about oh, 10 times in my first time playing and about 3-4 we're from me forgetting that you can get run over by teammates. Like Cuban said earlier, unless you said something like "sry"  "shit sorry" or anything along those lines, I did punish, while giving them about 30-40 seconds to say sorry incase they were in a firefight.

i !forgive this thread.
!f is my default action in game, hardcore and all that jazz, but most of the time i just have a good laugh.
although my patience gets tested when the same person repeatedly tk's me a few times in a row, then i again, there's been times when i have done exactly the same.
either way, the great "5 tk's and you're out" server terminator sorts 'em in the end. (the round has only just started and i get auto kicked because i've just ran over half my team mates - bad tank driver) :]

If I get TKed I will generally ask "why" in team or squad chat. If I do not get an answer of any sort (explanation, "sorry", etc..) I will punish. That being said, if it was clearly my fault it's an automatic forgive.

I don't punish players if they are level 30 or below, period. From there, it depends on the incident. I seldom punish, unless the TK was intentional. Usually people apologize, but even if they don't I let it go, unless it is Cuban. My favorite thing is when I accidentally TK someone, and they immediately punish before I can get the revive off.

Auto Punish Cuban is what I got from this message... lol

Similar situation, my favorite is when I'm trying to kill someone and the teammate thinks it's brilliant to run in front of me...!P right away. Like I feel the guy has a macro button that does "!P". I very rarely get punished, but it's usually the new guys that join the server, and after you say sorry (even though it was clearly their fault), they respond "Get better scrub" or if I ask why they punish right away, "Well, you should've stopped shooting when I came into view"...

QuoteIntentional TK = Ban.
To be clear, if the guy has the bomb and either doesn't know that he has the bomb or he's running to our objectives (because maybe he doesn't know how to play or maybe he's got friends on the other side), an intentional TK would justify a ban?

Just today, I heard (*ahem*) MIg members suggesting that very course of action.

Seriously, I wouldn't have thought that would be considered a bannable offense.

Stupidity is a bannable offense, although if they're this stupid and don't notice the YOU HAVE THE BOMB text, and the incessant beeping on themselves, we should really hold their heads under water for about 5 minutes. Darwinism must be satisfied.
