There's a major outcry within society and social media discussing the benefits of a Vegan/Plant based diet. Anyone here have personal experience with the pros or cons that you've personally experienced?

Whats your take on Vegan idealism?

Could you go out, hunt and slaughter your own meat if you had to?

Some populations of the world slaughter cats and dogs for cheap meat. Obviously we think that's barbaric behavior here in the west but to them its just food.

Could you live without meat in favor of eating nothing but veggies, tofu etc?

Is this your way of telling us you're vegan?

I've been a vegetarian before. It was the healthiest I've ever felt. If you are going to do it right its a lot of work preparing and planning meals. I'm not really big on that. So eventually bacon won out. I still limit my red meat intake though. I have vegan friends but they aren't assholes.

I don't eat fish cause I work with them but if needed I could do that (I kill so many now as it is). I wouldn't choose to kill another animal for food. If I HAD to I would. But it would be done as humanely as possible and I would feel bad about it.

I'm divided on the issue of eating cats and dogs. Meat is meat. But at the same time its inherently cruel and the animals are treated inhumanely and kept in horrible conditions. I push for more humane treatment of food production animals in western culture I would do the same for eastern.

So yes, I could live off veggies and tofu. Tofu is actually delicious when prepared right!!

Thanks for the respones,

Ive tried it myself but no matter how much beans, rice and veggies I ate I could never get full. I know plant foods contain all sorts of protein but its just not satisfying.

I'm curious which beans did you try? Personally, black beans really make me feel full.

I never had an issue with not feeling full. It was a time thing for me and I got in the rut of eating the same things over and over. I could definitely do it again!

Veganism is the sad result of a morally corrupt mind. Reconsider your life.

I did the vegan diet for about 3 months and went back to eating meats because of the holidays and i can't stay away from fried chicken. It's not really difficult to do. You just have plan your meals. I found a few vegan cooking blogs and Instagram posts that have really tasty recipes and cooking techniques, e.g. getting sauces creamy where you would usually use milk, cream, butter, or some kind of animal fat. The key cooking equipment that really helped me a lot are the high speed blender, like a VitaMix or BlendTec and food processor or immersion blender. These come in handy when you have to chop nuts, blend liquid nut mixtures, or making a mirepoix.

Variety of mushrooms (creaminis and shiitake for sure), all sorts of beans, rice, nuts and lentils really helped me through it. These foods will definitely help you feel satiated. If I couldn't eat these foods then it would've been a complete fail for me. Also, I tried to stay away from mock meats and cheeses. They tend to be filled with sodium and preservatives.

The best part about the diet, aside from losing 10 pounds, was my energy levels. I didn't feel as sluggish in the mornings or in the evenings. I do weight training and the diet didn't really affect me adversely as some might say when you don't have animal protein in your diet. I think it's completely false as I was still able to add more weight weekly to my lifting schedule. Side note: Carl Lewis, 9 time Olympic gold medalist and some NFL defensive line man are vegans. During the days I lift, I would try to consume as much protein as I could like eating more spinach, beans, lentils, nutritional yeast and tofu. Also, I have vegan protein powder made of brown rice that's pretty decent when mixed with almond milk.

Eating out can be difficult but not impossible. You just have to be aware on how you order and see if the restaurant can accommodate with a few tweaks, e.g use olive or some kind of vegetable oil instead of butter or don't put cheese on whatever

I think it's a good diet as it expanded my food and cooking knowledge more. Right now, I'm partial vegan. When I cook at home then I'll most likely have vegan meals and I'll have meat when eating out.

Hope you find this helpful.

what OEJ said, just add more potatoes.

i can go without meat, no worries there, as meat was a luxury when i was growing up. i've hunted, but never as a sport or an adult, mostly with out any fire arms (i was active in the air rifle shooting club at the time and am a great shot - fyi hehehe), and sometimes without dogs (we'd "borrow" neighbors hunting dogs lol), and sometimes just setting up traps. this wasn't as part of some scouts like club activities, although most of us were members at some point in time - just us kids, growing up in a provincial town in bosnia. we knew all the wild plants, roots, medicinal herbs, first aid, orientation, etc. we walked everywhere, had no equipment, just a chakia (a knife - being a bosnian) and a box of matches. sometimes we'd be more into exploring and we would bring bread and speck and maybe some rakija (home made plum brandy).
then i got old..

eat fresh, natural, low processed, diverse foods, and eat often. don't over eat.
then, on the other hand, fasting is great. (don't go crazy here though)
eating once a day also works well for some people, myself included, but i don't do that any more.
exercise is a must.
all things being equal, energy in equals energy out, afaic, and taking into account any medical/religious requirements.

happy new year ya'll !
