All,

I’ve been planning on upgrading my monitor and video card for a few months, but now I’m considering buying or building out a new custom gaming rig.

While my existing “core whore” HP Z820 Workstations are powerful (see spec’s and image below) enough to run many virtual machines for my home lab environment, they weren’t really designed for gaming.

It’s been a few years since I last spec’ed and built out a new custom gaming rig, so I’m a little out of the touch with the latest and greatest parts.

I would appreciate any constructive suggestions or recommendations on the parts list I put together below, I didn't spend much time researching everything yet and all the prices are from Amazon. FYI, I don't care for AMD parts, but I’m a ROG, Corsair and Samsung fan. Also let me know your thoughts on buying vs building, who to buy from (i.e. DigitalStorm) and CPU\GPU delidding…. Thanks in advance.

killer rig in the making but spare a thought for ryzen and its GFX passthrough tech? i know you said no to amd, but since you like virtual environments i thought i would suggest it anyway.

It appears that there are new processors to consider... While I prefer the i7-7740X over the i7-7700K for the same price, the i7-7820X looks sweet with its 8 cores (16 threads) 28 PCIe Lanes and overclockability to 4.8 GHz.

Intel Core i7-7700K - $349.99
Socket: LGA 1151
Clockspeed: 4.2 GHz
Turbo Speed: 4.5 GHz
No of Cores: 4 (2 logical cores per physical)
PCIe Lanes: 16
Typical TDP: 95 W

Maybe I'll just use this for my new gaming rig:

Intel Compute Stick
Quad-Core Intel Atom x5-Z8300 Processor with Intel HD graphics
2 GB DDR3L 1600 MHz
Integrated Wireless 802.11ac (Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265)
One USB 3.0 and One USB 2.0
Bluetooth 4.0
Windows 10 (32-bit)

Thats a lot of memory compared to what I have (2 x 4 GB). Would I see a performance boost in PUBG with more ram? Windows 10

Intel Core i7 4790K
corsair h100i
GTX 750 TI
8GB ram (ddr3 i think)

I'm playing my games on a generic gateway 1920 x 1080
I have to open up my PC and see what PSU I have so I can see my options for GPU upgrades are.I believe it was a 450W.

it should be enough for your setup - if you can trust the power figures of that power supply.
in bf4 my setup (i5 4670k @4.5 + baby water cooler, rx480 @1450/2200, 2560x1440@120Hz) uses about 4-5 GB of ram out of 16, so 8 is generally enough.
4790K combined with h100i/H2O is good for 4.5-4.6+ GHz with regular airflow, so your best upgrade path would be a new gfx'0r card.
do you know any miners?

oh, pubg you ask!
same applies, just from what i hear pubg is more buggy and possibly a little more demanding on hardware, not sure?

See if you can find a used 980ti for a good price. That'll last you a while if you're only gaming at 1920x1080.

Very similar to the setup I run on my new rig, to which I am pretty happy with over all. I am running everything on a Z270 board so I can add a second M.2 SSD later.
Samsung Evo 960 500gb - OS, Squad and BF4 loaded on here
Toshiba X300 4tb Storage HDD - Every other steam game, music, progs
Asus Strix 1080 1.8ghz card
Skylake i7 6700k
Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz 16gb (2x 8gb)

Wait... what?

I'm using a ASUS ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti  Platinum with a HP ZR30w at 2560x1600 and getting the following FPS:

PUBG with Ultra settings = 70 FPS
BF1 with Ultra settings = 130+ FPS

your gtx750ti tops at about 125 Watts, give or take a few.

allow 125 Watts  for the processor -

( https://forums.anandtech. ... consumption.2463807/ )

more if overclocking -

( https://www.extremetech.c ... s-low-clock-speeds/2 )

your motherboard and what not, consumes less then 100 watts if nothing too crazy going on inside the case, typically less then 80W.

125W+125W+100W= three fiddy watts's with another fiddy for the margin.

so you definitely can add a more powerful card, up to about 180 watts total, with no margarine! who needs margins anyway.
and that brings you into the gtx1080 watt range, see other cards power figures in the article below.

The rig your wanting to build looks great. Are you saying money is no object? If so I can show you the rig of rigs. If not then I can help you downgrade for a lower pricetag but with the same speed.

7700k is short on pcie lanes. Go with an X. You'll have r/w/wb latency and raid issues without the extra interface width.

Anything over 3000mhz ram is going to have stability issues with windows 10. Trust me on this one.

No need for ecc ram. That Asus board has bios control to implement ecc and unganged/ganged hole remapping on consumer grade sticks. Works fan-fucking-tastic.

Crucial ballistix in ddr3/4 are the most stout sticks you can buy. Blown up a shitload of ram overclocking and those are the only ones I'll buy now because of the beating they'll take. Overclocked or not.

You knew this was coming: Personally, I'd build it with twin 32 core epyc's on Supermicro's new 10gig eATX board with 128gb of 2400. But we're not spending my money.

The AMD Freesync works wonderfully with my 4K monitor. To each their own.

Punkbuster doesn't ban, it just kicks you if you trigger a violation. Anti-cheat services such as PBBANS and BF4DB ban based on those violations
Angry_Cuban13 2:35 PM
Anyone who triggers a PB violation gets automatically banned in PBBANS & BF4DB
Angry_Cuban13 2:35 PM
If you are trying to report players in BD4DB, the BF4DB plugin already monitors PB Violations
