Howdy all!

It's been AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGEEEEEEEEEES (ages) since I have had the time to really get down and dirty with gaming.  Additionally, it has been ages since I've chatted with all'y'all.

I need some help with deciding what core I should go with.

Current set up:

Mother Board:  Asus P9 X79 WS

CPU: I7 4930k (6 core/12 threads)

CPU cooler: Corsair H100i ( I believe)

Cooling: lel I won't need to upgrade this..

RAM:  16GBs Mushkin 2400 O/C

GPU:  3 way SLI GTX 780 classified cards.

Drives:  Too many, but my main gaming drive(s) are 2x 1 TB 10,000 rpm velociraptors in RAID 0.  (I don't think I will need to upgrade drives at all, unless there is some fancy pants drive out there that I must get)

Monitor(s):  3 24inch asus Gsync monitors VG24xxx somethingsomethings 5760 x 1080 resolution.

I'm hitting a wall in terms of performance and decided to build a PC on a whim.

Originally, I was planning on keeping this build for another year and then going all out again and go 3 4k screens...  (12288 x 2160 resolution).  But I just bought a new car and it's not financially responsible for me to go crazy like I did with my current build.  Because of that and because I am hitting a wall sooner than anticipating (holy hell has tech really exploded this past year, eh?) I am going to go 1 screen and 1 card.  3 cards and 3 screens has been fun as hell (especially for the first year or so) but drivers, finding games that are compatible, and setting up profiles have been a real pain in the ass.  I don't have time for these things no more.

What I want:

Mother Board: No clue

CPU: i7 something.. but really.. no clue.. I love my 6 cores but hate the fact that it has been 3 years and only a few games have optimized for 6 cores.  Any recommendations would be welcome.

RAM: DDR4 of course, but no clue

GPU:  Originally planned on a Titan X (pascal) for my 3 4k monitors.. buuuuuut as mentioned above.. not going to happen.  Should I just sell 2 of my 780s and use 1 780 for now and get the 1080ti when it comes out? Save a little money that way?  Or should I get the 1080 and then sell it for the 1080TI?  I definitely want a 1080ti eventually.  Any guesses on when the TI will come out?

Drives:  wasn't planning on any new drives, unless recommended for some reason.

Monitor:  This is where I'm arguing with myself the most.  I hear that 1440 (and I have seen) looks amazing.  Does not take as big of a hit on performance as 4k and I found a smexy ass 1440 monitor.  The reason I love my 5760 x 1080 is for racing games and getting a sense of immersion by having my peripheral vision encompassed.   The monitor I have my eye on is this bad boy which will do that job justice "ASUS ROG SWIFT PG348Q 34" Curved 3440x1440 100Hz IPS G-SYNC Gaming Monitor"  Wish it had a bit higher refresh rate, but it's IPS so I am happy.

OR should I get a 4k monitor?  I am leaning 4k just because... well.. 4k.. but don't have the slightest clue as to what to look at.  I've never even bothered looking into 4k in the past.  I notice a lot of 4k monitors have lower refresh rates for IPS.

Any assistance would be much appreciated!  Will hop onto the TS this week or next to chat.  Last time I got on though.. I didn't recognize a single person

Oh to add..

I want my compooter to be able to record video (like fraps or something) at high resolution and no stutter on my end.

and VR will be a definite hardware add on in 6-12 months.

Get an Asus Maximus VIII, and couple it with an I7 6700k.

I do play.. just don't play battlefield anymore.. I am also preparing for Star Citizen PTU 3.0

I will make an effort to get on TS over the next week or so.

Thanks!  Kind of leaning that way too.  The i7 6850k is a bit overkill, ya?  I am liking the looks of Broadwell-E though.. but doubt that would be useful to me. Would it be useful if I ran fraps and such? Or still overkill/worse for gaming?

Quoting HanSolo from another thread to reply to it.

"
i have just read your pc post so i will reply here.
if i were you, i would leave it as is, and maybe just buy that asus rog curved monitor or simillar ( https://pcpartpicker.com/ ... =344001440&T=1,6 ). your pc is powerful enough to run all the current games at that resolution. 4k is great but it's not yet "fps" ready and it's best to wait just a little longer, plus you're trying to budget.I first looked at going cheap route and getting an i7 6700k (I'm a huge fan of multitasking while gaming, or I would have gotten the i5)."

You are 100% correct Hans.. got a little carried away/impulsive lol.

I looked into everything further last night and realized that it would be minimal performance gains going from a i7-4930k to a i7-6700k. The performance gains were there, sure, but not as big of a leap as I thought. Because of that, I started looking at the i7 6850k. The i7 6850k is definitely performing (stock for stock) better than my current CPU by a noticeable margin. But now I was spending 600 bucks on a cpu.. so my budget upgrade was turning into a full rebuild at this point.. lol Additionally, I saw comparisons to the i7-4930k vs 6850k. They all said the same thing, 'If you were doing a full system upgrade, go for the 6850k because it's a bit faster and the instructions are a bit better. However, if you already have 1 of the cpus, it would be a waste of money to upgrade to the 6850k. The performance gains don't outweigh the price.' That is paraphrased, of course, but it sealed the deal for me. Furthermore, I found that my current CPU overclocked will out perform a STOCK i7 6850k by a pretty heavy margin.

So all I need to really change is the graphics cards.. 3gbs of VRAM isn't enough. I decided to go to a single card and drop SLI altogether. I looked at the 1080 but wasn't impressed (in single card form). I looked at the Titan and was highly UNimpressed. Outrageous price, for a card that doesn't produce outrageous numbers, I decided not to go 4k so I wouldn't see an outrageous difference. Should I wait for the 1080ti to launch? But then I may get even less for my 780s. I could get a 1080 and use that until the 1080ti comes out, but then im throwing a few hundred bucks down the drain, all said and done. Not to mention Nvidia is ALREADY planning on launching the next GPU chipset in 2017. Shit is coming out too quickly lol

I found that 2 980ti in sli out performs the Pascal Titan. And was sold when I saw I could get 2 980ti classifieds with the EK water block for the price of 1 1080.

TL;DR

keeping my CPU because performance to price difference was insignificant. I did up my RAM to 32gbs (Ram is cheap.. meh lol). Will overclock my CPU (I have the cooling to do it.. might as well use those industrial noctura fans!)

and got two 980tis that I can overclock to hell and back, in theory.

All in all, (after I sell my three 780s) I will have spent about 200 bucks on a huge upgrade.

I'm more than ecstatic.

Now.. to figure out what display I want.. My cards and RAM arrive today.. gotta love same day delivery!

You'll see me on TS more in the coming weeks.

Was going to, but I would need two 1080s to beat the 2 980tis.

I'm not patient enough to wait until the 1080ti. Two 980tis continue to crush one 1080.. granted.. you don't have sli issues, but I spent a little less than 1 1080 for two water 980tis. This is an intermediate upgrade rather then a full rebuild.

Going to get a monitor tomorrow. I'm hooking up my cards now, but doing a full format on my raid0 array drives.. having some degradation issues it seems

Will report back tomorrow once I benchmark the new set up.

Yep, I've had the Acer Predator version of that monitor since December.  It's absolutely fantastic.  I've been extremely lucky and haven't had one single issue. No dead pixels, scan lines, etc. Once you up the res scaling in BF4, it far surpasses any 4K monitor right now.  You're going to need 1080 sli to push that though, the 980tis hit the wall at a certain point.  Read my post in the PC showoff thread if you want more details.

Already came together! Got it all hooked up last night.. Had a hell of a lot of issues though.. My OCD was going crazy. Wire Managemeeeeent! I have three god damn radiators now lmao. So many hoses and pumps and shit. Had to squeeze everything in even with my full tower.

Finally got everything hooked up last night and went to turn it on. My chip started to fry.. OVertemp warnings everywhere. Couldn't figure out the culprit. Checked all wires thinking I may have disconnected something while hiding them for management reasons.. took an hour fussing with it. Maybe bios was reading wrong so went into realtemps and.. nope.. was definitely running hot.. was hitting 160degrees... CELSIUS!

even cleaned the heat sink and re applied thermal paste.. nothing.. after an hour I was about to give up.. I had checked ALL the wires already.. except the obvious one... some how managed to disconnect my CPU water pump and radiator from the motherboard.. running fine now...... LOL....................

Star Citizen on ultra setting.. omg omg omg omg!

I'll be on TS during the week. See you guys soon!

Oh.. and this Monitor? so god damn sexy. 3440 x 1440 ultra wide 21.5:9 aspect ration, true color scale. It's a masterpiece.

SELLING STUFF!

Does anyone want to buy some sheet? I have 3 GTX 780 classifieds going up for sale soon. They are benchmarking almost as high as my new set up. The only downside to them is that they have 3gbs of VRAM, hence the upgrade. They will play any game on ultra settings that require 3gbs of VRAM or less (most games). Probably not a great upgrade if you run higher resolution than 1920 x 1080. Some games now need 4gbs of VRAM to play on ultra settings, but it still destroys High settings at high fps rates.

I am selling 4 sticks (4gbs each) of Mushkin redline 2133mhrz ddr3. Amazing ram. Will sell them on the cheap.

I have three asus VG24qe 144hz 1ms 1920 x 1080 monitors. Awesome monitors, kind of sad to see them go. A monitor will come with the OEM internals for free. (OEM internals are in seperate boxes). What makes these monitors special is that I upgraded the internals to the Gsync modules that they were selling in limited number.

Additionally, I am selling an Ergotech 3x 24in monitor stand with telescopic arms.

Dont tell me that.. I just bought two 980tis lol.

I haven't hit a wall on any games I tried so far.  But then again, I don't mind using the game default ultra settings.  I don't turn the resolution scaling way up.

Oh you'll be more than fine with the 980tis then if you don't play with res scaling.  Those are still fantastic cards.  However, don't watch BF at 3440x1440 with max everything and res scaling at 190%, or GTA V with the same spec and 175% res scaling.  You'll be buying two 1080s right away.  ;D

I was finally able to find a 4 slot HB sli bridge, shipped yesterday and I'll have it on Tuesday. I'm interested to see if it helps, as I'm still using an older sli bridge.

Congrats on the new computer/monitor of course, it's always a joy to upgrade.

Oops, I forgot to mention one other thing. For DX12 games, you're going to need the 1080s. The 980tis were rotten for DX12, Rise of the Tomb Raider was barely playable in DX12 even with 980ti sli at 3440x1440. With the 1080s though, WOW, maybe the best looking game I've seen yet (next to GTA V honestly when all cranked up at 175% res scaling and 3440x1440). BF1 is going to have DX12 as well, so you're really going to need the 1080s I think for the best "good lawd" experience.

DX12 really is all that, I was incredibly surprised by the differences.

do you have 3dmark software?  I would love to see your bench mark scores on Firestrike Ultra and Firestrike Extreme.

The biggest difference is you have 2gbs more of vram.  which isn't a huge difference.  granted, 1080 sli vs 980 ti sli you'll see about 20% more performance., from what I've been seeing.  However, I can overclock the 980tis to hell and back.  My buddy who has a 1080 is running into thermal issues with the 1080, he never experienced this on his 980 ti.  Additionally, I could play bf4 on ultra with 200% res scale with my 780s at 120 frames (forget which) so if I have a want/need to do so I could just set the res to 1920 x 1080.  1440 is a new experience for me though, so don't know why I would want to do that lolol

But I'm happy regardless.  I went from 780s to 980tis, which is a huge leap.  I'm destroying all the games I've tried so far even with upping the resolution.  By the time I start seeing a difference in benchmark scores, the 1080ti might be out, or volta.  Then I can consider upgrading.  Till then though, I am more than pleased.  Spent 750 bucks on 2 EK water block 980 tis.  50 bucks more than 1 1080 but is absolutely destroying (ONE) 1080 in 3dmark.  I would have had to spend double to get a see beneficial performance gains.  I just bought a V60 Polestar.. I'm not swimming in the cash right now hahaha

Do I sound slightly defensive?  Only a little   lol  But still, get me 3dmark (or some similar program) benchmarks from your rig, I am truly curious as to how much of  a difference it is... hopefully nothing more than 20%.. I can live with 20% LOL

At 1080p?  I wasn't able to get anywhere near close to that even with 980s at 1080p, 4Gb VRAM killed it.

Not sure about the 980tis at 1080p, I had the Predator before I bought those.
